a rich history

Nestled in the heart of Zermatt with stunning views of the Matterhorn, the Hotel Perren is a distinguished establishment with a rich history. Founded in 1956 by the Perren family, it has become one of Zermatt’s most cherished hotels, renowned for its hospitality, service, and family atmosphere.

Zermatt’s rise began in the mid-19th century, fueled by the daring exploits of British adventurers and mountaineers, leading to the establishment of iconic hotels such as Monte Rosa, Mont Cervin Palace and Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Key moments, like the first ascent of Pointe Dufour in 1855 and the legendary climb of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper in 1865, attracted waves of mountaineers and cemented Zermatt’s reputation as a highly sought-after destination. The opening of the Matterhorn Gotthard railway line in 1880 and the first electric rack railway in Switzerland, the GGB Gornergrat Bahn, in 1898, significantly contributed to the growth of tourism in the region.

As the 20th century progressed, Zermatt expanded its hospitality offerings with luxury hotels and guesthouses catering to the influx of tourists. The 1950s to 1970s saw a boom in visitors, leading to the construction of new hotels and private residences. From the 1980s onwards, Zermatt solidified its status as an exclusive destination, attracting visitors year-round. Modern developments have seen Zermatt’s hotels champion sustainability, with many establishments adopting environmentally friendly technologies and practices. Simultaneously, the town remains synonymous with luxury, offering top-tier amenities, wellness offerings, and gourmet dining experiences.

Over the years, the Hotel Perren has continuously developed and modernized to meet the evolving needs of its guests. The property has undergone several renovations and expansions to improve comfort and amenities, while retaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Embracing sustainability and offering top-tier amenities – from wellness services to gourmet dining – the perren exemplifies Zermatt’s blend of tradition and modern luxury.

a vision by pierre yovanovitch

Pierre Yovanovitch’s work at the perren showcases his interest in traditional carpentry techniques, prominently featuring wood assemblies and intricate joinery. Painted decorations on wood are a signature element of his designs. He incorporates classic elements of local Swiss architecture, such as geometric patterned parquet and naive local motifs, reinterpreting them to create a contemporary feel.

Pierre is dedicated to using only natural, traditional, and noble materials in all his projects. His process emphasizes craftsmanship, often collaborating with local artisans or long-term partners skilled in decorative painting or ceramics. Traditional techniques are prominently featured, including sandblasting, brushing, texturing, and gouging wood, as well as applying patina on metals. Pinewood and cladding are central elements throughout the project, complemented by textured and contrasting rough stones.

The project embraces the raw, rugged essence of the mountains, which is reflected in the treatment of the furniture, characterized by raw wood textures. Pierre’s commitment to color is evident in the furniture, fabrics, and ceramic glazes, adding warmth and intimacy to each space.

“By reinterpreting the codes of Valaisian style that I had deeply immersed myself in, and blending them with a contemporary aesthetic, I wanted to demonstrate how tradition and craftsmanship can harmonize perfectly with modern art and design. New harmonies emerge, where the pursuit of simplicity is seamlessly paired with thoughtful sophistication.”
